We at the University of Regina offer our sincere apologies for an egregious error in the printing of our Fall/Winter 2020 issue of Degrees, the University magazine.

In referring to a transgender person, we inadvertently used their birthname in lieu of the name that they use. This process is known by many in the 2SLGBTQ+ community as “using their deadname.” We recognize that this is not only incredibly offensive, but is a violation of their privacy and identity, and carries psychological and emotional trauma for the victim. Though this error was unintentional, using a deadname in the magazine was, and is, inexcusable. For that, we are deeply sorry.

We are taking the following actions to help address this particular situation, including:

  • Destroying undistributed and repossessed print copies of the Fall/Winter 2020 issue of Degrees;
  • Correcting the error on the Degrees magazine downloadable PDF;
  • Initiating a limited print run of Degrees magazine with the error corrected; and,
  • Ensuring that 2SLGBTQ+ content appears in the Spring/Summer 2021 issue of Degrees

Members of the University’s Executive Team, as well as University Advancement and Communications (UAC), the unit responsible for the production of Degrees magazine, have offered a sincere apology directly to the person we harmed. As an organization – and as people – we have committed to working with them and the UR Pride Centre for Sexuality and Gender Diversity to ensure that we take action to mitigate the hurt we have caused to them and the 2SLGBTQ+ community – a community that we value greatly.

Through meaningful conversation with the affected person and UR Pride, the University has come to understand that current policies and practices have inadvertently affected others, albeit in not as public a manner. We understand that while the person harmed by this mistake is known to us, many trans and non-binary students, faculty, and staff at the University experience acts of deadnaming and/or misgendering on a daily basis within our campus community. We would like to also offer an apology to all those trans and non-binary people, and their loved ones, who we have harmed in this way, without knowing.

As we move forward, the University is committed to continuing our training for staff through our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) office and UR Pride to ensure that institutional communications are sensitive to the 2SLGBTQ+ community and inclusive in nature. Additionally, a review of processes related to individual naming policies will be undertaken to find ways to better manage situations involving naming in the future.

The University is inviting those in the 2SLGBTQ+ community to work with us so that to the degree it is possible we can atone for damage we have caused in the past, and implement ideas for creating a more inclusive campus. The University is also offering sponsorship of UR Pride’s GSA Outreach program, which helps to educate youth and their teachers in Regina schools about 2SLGBTQ+ inclusion.

The University has identified well-being and belonging as a priority within its most recent Strategic Plan, with a commitment to EDI as a major institutional goal. Creation of an EDI Action Plan is underway to promote and help build an inclusive organizational culture that integrates EDI considerations into teaching, research, and learning.

We recognize that this long-overdue work is just beginning, and that we have far to go to cultivate an inclusive environment – one that is stronger as a result of diverse perspectives. Together, we will move forward in creating a more positive, inclusive, University of Regina that fulfills our Strategic Plan’s vision to “reflect the world in which we want to live.”

Max Schmeiser has always been in a hurry. From zipping across hockey rinks in his youth, to racing  through his education at the University of Regina, he is always chasing his goals.

Growing up in Regina, he was a serious kid who knew exactly what he wanted to be-an economics professor. It was, after all, the perfect melding of his parents' occupations: an agricultural economist (his dad) and a schoolteacher (his mom). He sped through his undergraduate career at the University of Regina in three years, not because he wasn't enjoying what he was learning, but because he only knows one speed-fast.

Multiple degrees followed-a Master of Arts in Economics from McMaster University, and both a Master of Science and PhD in Policy Analysis and Management from Cornell University-and just like that, he realized his dream. Schmeiser became an assistant professor in the Department of Consumer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching classes on topics such as family economics and risk management.

Long before Schmeiser became the head of data science for Twitter, he was a student at the University of Regina, taking every economics class he could pack into his schedule.

He was still in his 20s and had accomplished everything he set out to do. Young Max was right: being a professor was a wonderful job. But it turned out there were other careers beyond the dreams of even the most ambitious child interested in economics. Little did he know back then, as a kid running around the wide-open spaces of Saskatchewan, that he would one day live in a much hillier city, playing an instrumental role in the success of one of the world's biggest social media platforms.

Long before Schmeiser became the head of data science for Twitter, he was a student at the University of Regina, taking every economics class he could pack into his schedule. "It was 
a small program, and I appreciate the connection I had with the professors," he says. "I had the good fortune to get a research assistantship position with Dr. Marion Jones, and I got to be a teaching assistant as well while I was there, which really helped set me up for grad school."

From the beginning, he knew his long-planned major was the perfect fit. Even behind a mask-the default accessory these days in Schmeiser's current home base, Seattle-his face lights up when he talks about economics. He finds it offers a way to view the world, a lens that filters out the chaos and puts the spotlight squarely on the facts. Schmeiser loves how it explains so much about our lives, from how many children we have to whom we choose to date. "Everything just made sense to me as I took the economics courses, and I knew this was the right field for me," he says.

Although it's not a transition he anticipated making, he thrived in an environment where everything he did had practical applications for people's daily lives.

Schmeiser became a professor just before the global financial crisis wiped out many of the jobs in academia. Still, budget cuts were leaving holes at the university where he was teaching. When a colleague let him know about an opening at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C., Schmeiser was ready to leap at the offer. There, he could continue his research on financial literacy, mortgage defaults and foreclosure, now adding a regulatory component to the mix.

As a principal economist in the Microeconomic Surveys section and a senior economist in the Consumer Research section, he worked on consumer and housing finance research and regulation. He was responsible for launching two recurring surveys on consumer financial well-being: one on mobile financial services, the other on household economics and decision-making.

Although it's not a transition he anticipated making, he thrived in an environment where everything he did had practical applications for people's daily lives.

Five years later, Schmeiser's next career move to the Seattle-based behemoth, Amazon, continued that trajectory of making a difference-and fast.

"I like seeing a direct impact, and that was slower to do as a professor," he says. "You would get government contracts or do consulting work or do research that would eventually get picked up and inform policy, but there were several steps in between. This was getting a little closer to having a direct impact on the world in the sense that I was creating regulations and my research got more prominence."

Five years later, Schmeiser's next career move to the Seattle-based behemoth, Amazon, continued that trajectory of making a difference-and fast. "At the Federal Reserve, I could affect Americans through policies I helped to inform, but at Amazon I could make changes and the next day be affecting hundreds of millions of customers or hundreds of thousands of businesses, so the scale and the immediacy of the impact I really appreciated," he says.

At Amazon, he found a great fit with the culture, which emphasizes data-driven decision-making, impact-oriented solutions, and making reversible decisions quickly and irreversible decisions with considerable thought (and knowing how to distinguish the two). "I can't imagine there's anywhere you'll learn as much in a short period of time as you will at Amazon," he says.

Then, Twitter came calling in early 2020. Schmeiser thought about the potential impact he could have, particularly during an election year and in the COVID-19 era, and felt it was 
too good of an opportunity to pass up.

After holding multiple data science leadership roles there, including head of research, analytics and machine learning in Amazon Connections and chief economist and head of data science for Amazon Lending, Schmeiser joined trucking logistics startup Convoy just as it was primed for rapid growth after a Series C fundraising round. He'd always wanted to work at a startup, and he relished the challenge to not only leverage data science to optimize the freight industry, but to have a hand in creating the company culture and structuring teams. In the nearly two years he spent at Convoy, he grew the data science group from eight employees to more than 80. In working at one of the fastest-growing startups in the U.S., with the chance to inform product direction and strategy, Schmeiser had every box ticked on his job wish list.

Then, Twitter came calling in early 2020. Schmeiser thought about the potential impact he could have, particularly during an election year and in the COVID-19 era, and felt it was 
too good of an opportunity to pass up. With more than 300 million active users, Twitter is a worldwide watercooler for 
the exchange of ideas and information. As entrepreneur and author Charlene Li put it, "Twitter is not a technology. It's 
a conversation. And it's happening with or without you."

Schmeiser wanted it to happen with him. Of course, starting a new job during a pandemic is not without its challenges. He's only virtually met the 60 members of the team he manages, and the transition to a new company was somewhat anticlimactic in comparison to pre-coronavirus days. "I just exchanged laptops and different people showed up on my screen," he says, laughing.

The work he gets to do, though, is exactly what he hoped. As head of data science, Schmeiser leads a team that performs analyses and runs experiments to better understand the impact of product launches on the public conversation happening on Twitter. They use a full set of tools under the data science umbrella to accomplish their goals, from developing metrics and success measurements to A/B testing and offline evaluation to prototyping and forecasting.

While data remains at the heart of what Schmeiser does, many of his responsibilities involve managing more than numbers. As he's progressed in his career, he now has people to manage too. "Maybe this comes from where I grew up, but I really care about my team members individually and their well-being," he says. "I'm looking out for them, I care for them, I want to support them, and I have their best interests at heart. People don't necessarily always get that sense from their bosses and their boss's bosses."

He also finds ways to bolster people beyond just those he works with directly. In January 2020, he began volunteering with Co.Labs as a mentor for early-stage tech startup founders in Saskatchewan. Given the challenges that the province's economy has been facing the past several years, he felt his experience and insights could be of help in fostering a robust tech community and assisting companies as they scale their data science teams.

Although Schmeiser isn't sure whether he'll one day move back to his hometown-that would depend on the needs and desires of his family, including wife Maria and their 3-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son-he does fondly remember the big sky, the never-ending horizon, and the summer sun that stretched long into the night. Scraping the windshield in 30°C temperatures  is something he admits he's forgotten how to properly gear up for.

In gratitude for the strong foundation he received as a student at the University of Regina, he recently created 
a scholarship for the domestic student with the highest GPA in the Honours program within the Department of Economics. 
He hopes others will get just as much out of the degree as he has. "A degree in economics is a wonderful basis for a whole range of careers," he says. "It offers a good framework for thinking about the world and business and policies. This is why you see economists everywhere, in government, academia, tech and consulting roles. It's a wonderful education to help you be very effective in a number of circumstances."

Even though a future career at Twitter certainly wasn't on Schmeiser's mind as an undergrad-the social network was still a twinkle in the founders' eyes back then-the beauty of studying economics is that it can be applied to a wide range of situations. "Once you have those basic tools and know how to think through business problems, it doesn't matter what the business problem is," he says. "The tools are the same; it's just a matter of changing what you're analyzing."

The frenzied pace that Schmeiser favored in his youth may have slowed  a bit , but that laser focus on efficiency is still there. "When it comes to work, I have a sense of wanting to get things done quickly, while balancing speed with appropriate levels of rigour, and wanting to see accomplishment and progress relatively quickly," he says.

To do that, Schmeiser is decisive in his choices. That doesn't mean he isn't willing to reverse course if the data supports it, but he has a good sense for what he wants to do and how he wants to do it.

The only downside to working in tech is that it doesn't leave much time for Schmeiser's first love, teaching, but he plans to return to the classroom one day.

For someone who had his life mapped out when he first stepped onto the University of Regina campus, he's amazed that once his vision was fulfilled, another one came along to supplement it. He is a textbook case of loving what you do and doing it well. When you excel, others can't help but notice, and that will always open doors. "It's surprising that a lot of what I've done is in no way directed," he says. "Whatever I'm doing at the time, I do the best I possibly can at it. I'm never looking for the next thing; it just seems to happen and make sense."

Tech, as it turns out, is an ideal fit. It's just as hurried as Schmeiser tends to be, with real-world results that fulfill his overarching career mission: to have a positive impact on the greatest number of people possible. Plus, he gets to geek out all day long on those things he loves the most, including ensuring that every decision is informed by accurate data and rigorous empirical analysis, separating out correlation from causation, and using statistical and empirical techniques to solve business problems. He brings this same approach to his personal life. He jokes that he annoys his wife by talking about opportunity cost, allocating resources to their most efficient use and time value, like when he points out the time she spends returning something costs her X dollars in time, and is ultimately not worth it.

The only downside to working in tech is that it doesn't leave much time for Schmeiser's first love, teaching, but he plans to return to the classroom one day. There, he will continue sparking that same joy in others that he first felt when he realized he can use economics to answer so many questions that apply to the real world, such as figuring out what incentives people respond to or pinpointing when someone will get married.

Maybe you can't hurry love, but as Schmeiser knows well, you absolutely can hurry the statistical analysis that predicts it-and that carries an excitement, maybe even a romantic notion, all of its own.

University of Regina alum and former Member of Parliament for Regina-Wascana, the Honourable Ralph Goodale BA'71, has been appointed as High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

 

In his new position, Goodale will provide strategic advice to the Prime Minister on areas of importance to people in Canada and the United Kingdom. This includes many current and ongoing challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, pursuing post-Brexit trade, and creating job opportunities.

"Ralph Goodale's decades of experience will continue to serve Canadians well in his new position as High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As a trusted advisor in London, he will work to further strengthen the friendship between our two countries while we work together to tackle our greatest challenges, and continue to offer thoughtful and heartfelt advice on behalf of Canadians," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in an announcement from the Office of the Prime Minister, this week.

 

Goodale grew up on a farm near Wilcox, Saskatchewan and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Regina in 1971 when it was the Regina Campus of the University of Saskatchewan. He went on to graduate from the University of Saskatchewan in 1972 with a Bachelor of Laws degree. Goodale also received the University of Regina President's Community Award in 2014, which recognized his contributions to public service and his dedication to Saskatchewan and its residents.

 

"As one of the University of Regina's most distinguished alumni, Mr Goodale has served our province and country with integrity and distinction for nearly five decades," said University of Regina Interim President and Vice-Chancellor Thomas Chase. "There is no one more experienced or more qualified to represent Canada internationally, and on behalf of our entire University community, I wish him all the best in this important role."

 

Most recently, Goodale served in the federal Cabinet as Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness. He was also the lead on Canada's response to Iran's shooting down of Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 in a special advisory position to the Prime Minister.

 

  1. You attended the University of Regina and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1971 -- can you tell me about your time at the University of Regina and how it impacted your life and your career going forward?

It was a very interesting time at the University of Regina, it was the late 1960's, and that was a turbulent era. There were lots of issues that were preoccupying young people. The University of Regina was a particularly vigorous and active campus - a new campus - back in those days, and I think that that experience solidified with me is that the political process is a good and worthy process. It is a valid way, an important way, to address issues and to accomplish objectives. People would have different opinions of course on whether politics is worth their while. It's a rough and tumble process and it has some disconcerting aspects to it. Sometimes it's not very respectful, sometimes it doesn't seem to be very effective, it doesn't motivate people or strike them in a way that you really want to invest your time and effort in order to change things and get things done.

With the professors that I had during that period of time, with the fellow students that I associated with from all different political perspectives - left, right, and centre - that experience really convinced me that politics was a worthwhile thing to get involved in. I had no idea at that time that I might be a political candidate myself, run for public office, and get elected. The idea of being involved in political work, it struck me as something I was be interested in, and it was worth a try to see if we could get some things done through the process. My experience at the U of R really solidified that it was indeed worthwhile.

 

  1. Growing up near Wilcox, Saskatchewan, did you always want to go into politics or did you have another career path in mind?

Politics was always of interest to me, but I didn't think that would be my full-time occupation. When I was quite a bit younger I was thinking about medicine. Around the time I was finishing high school and thinking about university, law became my principal objective.

I took a combined arts/law program at the U of R, at that time it was the University of Saskatchewan, Regina Campus, and then segued to the U of S. I was able to combine the arts degree with the law degree, so instead of five years I got it done in four. That's really what I had in mind when I started at the University of Regina.

One other notion in the back of my mind was journalism. I spent my summers as a summer relief student at CBC Saskatchewan. So those were the three things - medicine a long time ago, then law and broadcasting were my principal points of attention while going to the U of R. Politics came along right after that and diverted me into a new direction.

 

  1. What has it been like going from a small town in Saskatchewan to now, working with the federal government and closely with the Prime Minister of Canada?

It's been an interesting journey and one that I had never anticipated that it might unfold the way that it has. As you take on new challenges and opportunities, it's always really important to remember your foundations, remember your roots. Your family, your friends, the people you went to school with, the teachers, the mentors, the coaches. All of those people at a very basic community level, they shape your life. They give you the foundation upon which you can do other things and reach your objectives.

It's been a fascinating journey, one that I have enjoyed every minute of. Even some of the rough and tumble minutes, when things haven't gone the way that you would have hoped. There are always disappointments along the way.

I think that the critical thing is to stay grounded, stay well-rooted in the values and the principles that you grew up with. Always maintain that proper perspective on what your real objectives are and what are the things that are the most worthwhile. It all relates to being respectful of other people, and valuing what they contribute to your life story.

 

  1. What would your advice be to current students who are interested in a career in politics?

Number one is to maintain that interest. We live in a very open, inclusive, and democratic system. It depends on people taking an interest and participating to be a part of the process. Resist the temptation to be cynical. Resist the pressures where people may say that there are so many better things that you can do with your life. I understand that criticism, but stick with it. Stay interested and stay involved. Pick your goals and pick your objectives and work hard to achieve them. And don't underestimate yourself! Make sure that you're working hard, you're maintaining your ideals. Dream big and be ambitious and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish at the end of the day.

 

  1. You have now started in your new role as High Commissioner for Canada in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, what are you most looking forward to?

There are two things that immediately come to mind. In this role you have the unique opportunity to represent all of Canada on the international stage. In this case, the United Kingdom, which is one of the largest Canadian diplomatic postings around the world. That is a tremendous honour. To have the privilege to be speaking for Canada in international organizations and forums. To be representing the country that we all love, that is a huge privilege.

The other is being a listening post to Canada and trying to absorb all of the perspectives that you hear from other governments, in my case the British government. From this vantage point you hear a tremendous amount of input from Europe and from the Middle East. Trying to make sense of all of that and then filtering all of that back to advise the Government of Canada. That's a wonderful role to have. To represent your country in the international arena and then to gather international input and feed that back to people in Canada. This helps to ensure that Canada can make the greatest contribution to global affairs, but at the same time being, in its own right, diplomatically, politically, and economically effective and successful.

It's a new role, I have never done this before. After 45 or 50 years of active political life, making that transfer from politics to diplomacy, I hope I can do that successfully. I am certainly looking forward to the challenge.
